The information below should whet your appetite for some of Cambodia’s popular tourist destinations. There are also many other attractions and sights in these locations and also in the country’s quieter and more remote rural provinces, which may interest the more intrepid visitor.

Siem Reap

Siem Reap is in the north-east of Cambodia and is a 6-7 hour drive or short flight from Phnom Penh. It is the gateway to Angkor and as such is a popular tourist destination and home to Cambodia's second international airport. The temples in the Angkor region are a must-see for visitors with sufficient time.  Siem Reap is a picturesque town, which features colonial and Chinese-style architecture in the old French Quarter and around the Old Market. Like Phnom Penh, there are many fabulous restaurants and a great selection of night markets. Beyond the temples,  there are plenty of things to see and do in Siem Reap, including Phare (the Cambodian Circus), a trip to Artisans Angkor to see some traditional Khmer silk-making, stone and wood carving, lacquering and painting.  If you have a little more time, you can visit some of the outlying temples such as Beng Mealea, Koh Ker and Preah Vihear.

Battambang

Battambang is situated in the north-west of the country. It is the country's second most populated city and approximately five hours by car from Phnom Penh or three hours from Siem Reap. Battambang known as 'the rice bowl of Cambodia' as it is the leading rice growing province. The Sangkae River winds through the province and Battambang city has some well preserved colonial architecture and nearby ancient temples. Hire a local tuk tuk or motodop (motorbike taxi) for a great day out exploring the surrounding countryside. You can visit temples, ride on the bamboo train, or visit prahok and rice paper 'factories'. In the evening,  a performance of the Phare Ponleu Selpak (Cambodian Circus) is not to be missed. Battambang is also one of the best places to sample authentic Khmer cuisine from roadside stalls, markets and local eateries. There is also a growing number of lovely guesthouses, boutique hotels and international restaurants to enjoy.

Kampot

Kampot is a delightful town located on the Kampot River, near the Gulf of Thailand. Kampot is famous for its locally grown pepper, considered to be amongst the world's finest and a feature of local seafood dishes.  Staying at one of the guest houses along the river offers lovely views of the water with Bokor Mountain as a back drop.  If you enjoy water sports and adventure activities, then Kampot is the place for you. Many guesthouses can arrange wakeboarding, water skiing and kayaking. Quad bikes are a great way to explore the area, and rock climbing and caving are also available. Kampot is half an hour's drive from Kep.

Kep

Kep is a lovely little seaside town just 2.5 hours drive south from Phnom Penh. Kep offers a range of accommodation options and some of the best seafood in the country. You can visit one of the many crab shacks situated on the beachfront and feast on crab, prawns, squid, fish and stingray. Don't miss the crab with pepper sauce - the taste of the fresh green Kampot peppercorns is one you will crave for for years to come!

Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville, also known as Kompong Som, is located in southern Cambodia on The Gulf of Thailand and is the country's most popular beach destination. Sihanoukiville has something for everyone - the main beach is a popular party area, and the surrounding beaches have a quieter, more relaxed feel.  Most importantly, there are beautiful islands off the coast which are accessible by boat. Recently, speed boat services have started and these can now quicky take you paradise, with pristine sands and bungalows on the beach. Diving can be arranged from both Sihanoukville and the islands.

Phnom Penh

If you find you don't have enough time to visit other parts of Cambodia, there is plenty to entertain you in Phnom Penh.  There are many sightseeing activities to do within the city limits,  or you may prefer relaxing by the pool, sampling the local cuisine or dining at some of the fantastic international restaurants. Treat yourself to some pampering or shopping at the markets,  take a cruise on the Tonle Sap or even have a holiday within a holiday with an overnighter at one of the guest houses across the Mekong. Whatever you choose, you will not be bored!
